Rojo makes return as youngsters win

- By RICHARD FAY

JOSE Mourinho was handed a huge injury boost after Marcos Rojo made his long awaited return last night.

The Argentine defender made his first appearance since damaging his cruciate ligament in April when he featured for the Under-23s in their Premier League International Cup victory over Athletic Club.

The 27-year-old looked comfortable on his return to action as United came from behind to beat their Spanish opponents 2-1.

Rojo didn’t manage a clean sheet as Gorka Guruzeta put the visitors ahead early on.

The young forward sent a vicious volley into the bottom corner of Kieran O’Hara’s goal after Demi Mitchell failed to clear a lofted through ball.

With the Reds trailing, Rojo almost scored the equaliser when he headed a close range effort over the bar late in the first half.

It was the last notable action of the match from the defender who was replaced at half-time.

United were level shortly after the break as James Wilson netted his fifth goal in his last eight matches. The 21-year-old connected with a brilliant cross by Zachary Dearnley to head the Reds level moments after the restart.

The comeback was complete with ten minutes left when Ethan Hamilton lashed in a low effort after a selfless assist from Tosin Kehinde in the box.

There was another boost for United late on as Callum Gribbin came on for his first appearance of the season after suffering a fractured fibula in August.
