Student found dead at uni halls of residence

- By HELEN JOHNSON

A MANCHESTER Metropolitan University student has died at halls of residence in south Manchester.

Police were called to Oxford Court, on Stretford Road, in Hulme, on Friday morning by the ambulance service.

Officers arrived to the scene at 10am and discovered the body of a man. Greater Manchester Police said the man’s family have been informed.

Officers have not been able to confirm his age at this stage and have not released his name.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been passed to the coroner.

A spokesman for Manchester Metropolitan University said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of a student in halls of residence.

“Our thoughts are with family and friends at this difficult time.

“Professionally trained counselling staff are offering support to students and staff affected and the University has offered assistance to the student’s family.”

People commenting on the M.E.N. Facebook page paid tribute to the man.

Stephen Mooney said: “So very sad especially at this time. I would hope he wasn’t alone for very long. Rest in peace.”

Michelle Frater said: “Heartbreaking. Thoughts to his family, peers and lecturers.”

Adele Hynes said: “So so sad when he should be having the best times...RIP xxx”

Samantha Kehir added: “My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time rip xxx”

The circumstances of the student’s death have not yet been confirmed. A small number of students have died in halls of residence in Greater Manchester in the last two years.

In July an inquest heard that a medical student took his own life at his university halls after struggling with anxiety and the stress of his degree.

Trainee doctor Matthew Rowe, 20, who died in January last year, told friends at Manchester University that he was finding his five-year course difficult and had suffered from hand tremors and insomnia.

In September, an inquest heard that a Manchester Metropolitan University student who self harmed and said the ‘world would be better if he were dead’ took his life a day after a ten-minute session with a student counsellor.
