A CAR ploughed into a bus following a police pursuit.

Emergency services were called to Old Church Street in Newton Heath after the Seat Leon smashed into the back of the Stagecoach bus yesterday afternoon.

It is understood people inside the car fled. The police helicopter could later be seen hovering above.

A GMP spokesman confirmed a vehicle was pursued by officers through Newton Heath.

They said the vehicle collided with a bus and the occupants abandoned it.

A man was arrested and police were continuing to search for others thought to have been inside the car. Images from the scene showed the wreckage left after the white car smashed into the bus.

Old Church Street was closed in both directions and buses were diverted after an investigation was launched.

Phil Beswick, driver of the 171 Stagecoach bus, said: “They must have been doing 70 or 80mph and they hit the back of me.

“There was a little old lady and a young woman on the bus at the time. Nobody was hurt, which is the main thing.” He said he saw two men run away. A shopkeeper said he saw an officer chasing a man on foot down Great Newton Street.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
