Synagogue and boarding school plans
60 STUDENTS COULD LIVE ON THE SITE OF VICTORIAN HOUSE SET TO BE DEMOLISHED
A NEW boarding school could soon be built in Salford.
A large Victorian house is to be demolished for a Jewish Yeshiva, a school and a new synagogue.
The planning application, for the development on land at the junction of Park Lane, and Upper Park Road in Broughton Park, will be considered by councillors tomorrow.
The site is currently empty after a girls school relocated. A town hall report says the property, dating back to 1870, has been subjected to several ‘unsympathetic’ extensions, yet it features on a list of heritage assets.
It is next door to Broughton House, a residential care home for ex-servicemen and women, which is also due to be knocked down and replaced with a veterans’ village.
The plan is for a Jewish higher education establishment which focuses on the study of traditional texts. The application also includes proposals for 14 dormitories for up to 60 students to board on site.
The four-storey building would also include a boys school, which would be operated by the Lubavitch Boys School and would take up to 80 pupils, from four to 16-years-old.
Seven objections have been made by residents living near the site.
They claim congestion is already an issue, and the residential facilities of the college would be ‘out of keeping’ with the use of the building.
