Adamson honoured by role at Hornets

- RUGBY LEAGUE By TOM BRAMWELL

EX-SALFORD and Oldham forward Luke Adamson has been named Rochdale Hornets co-captain, alongside halfback Danny Yates.

The 30-year-old spent last season with Roughyeds, before making the switch to the Crown Oil Arena, where he has joined his brother Toby.

And Adamson, who has also played rugby union with Bath, admits he did not expect to be handed a leadership role so early in his time with the club.

“I was surprised when coach Alan Kilshaw asked me, but also honoured at the same time,” he explained.

“It will be a great honour to lead the club this season and, fingers crossed, we can do really well.”

Former St Helens playmaker Yates has been named co-captain and Adamson hopes his Super League experience - which includes more than 140 matches for Salford - can help him to take the pressure off his younger co-captain.

“He’s still really young, and me being there alongside him takes some stress off his shoulders, but at the end of the day he is the general who leads us round the field.

“You want to take some of that burden off Danny, and that’s probably why we have gone for co-captains.”

Adamson and Yates take on the captaincy position that was last year filled by Lewis Palfrey, another former Roughyed.

“We should recognise what a great job Lewis Palfrey did as captain last season,” said Kilshaw.

“With increased family and work commitments we have opted to take some pressure off him this season and allow him to focus on his own game to further get the best out of him.”
