City has three of hippest locations

-

RECENTLY named one of the most exciting cities in the world, Manchester is getting noticed for being one of the most hipster locations too.

The district of Ancoats has been named the most hipster area of Manchester and seventh most hipster in the UK, closely followed by Chorlton and the Northern Quarter, according to a list by TravelSupermarket.

On the website’s 20 hippest neighbourhoods in the country, Ancoats comes in at number seven with a hip hangout score of 23, beating Hull’s Old Town (No. 8) and Glasgow’s Patrick (No. 9).

The trendy South Manchester suburb of Chorlton is listed at 10 with a score of 20, just ahead of Liverpool’s Baltic Traingle.

The Northern Quarter - Manchester’s original hipster haven - is further down the list at 19, beating Oxford’s suburb of Jericho in the top 20.

Last year, Ancoats stole the hipster crown coming in first place, but Bristol’s Montpelier has been named the leading hipster hot spot for 2018.

The Hip Hangout indexes compared the ratio of trend-setting and creative industry indicators such as independent coffee shops, vintage fashion stores, vinyl record shops, vegan cafes, independent bike shops, co-working spaces and art galleries to the number of residents.

Penalty points were subtracted for areas that had high numbers of big chain brands, which would indicate that they had reached ‘peak hipster’.

Emma Grimster, TravelSupermarket spokesperson, said: “After scoring the UK and Europe to find the most up-and-coming, independent areas, we hope the guide gives people ideas for new destinations to visit, at home or abroad.

“Wrap up warm and enjoy exploring somewhere new.”
