Latics boss angry with captain over injury in Bury draw

- By SHELDAN KEAY @MENSports

OLDHAM ATHLETIC boss Richie Wellens was far from pleased with defender Anthony Gerrard following his side’s 2-2 draw at local rivals BURY on Saturday.

Goals from Jay O’Shea and Neil Danns had put Bury 2-0 up, but Craig Davies pulled a goal back before half-time, with Ben Pringle then scoring in the closing stages to rescue a point for Oldham.

Wellens was forced into an early change when Gerrard went down injured with a tight calf, with the Oldham boss venting his frustration at his captain after revealing he had been dealing with the issue before kick-off.

“Gerrard was injured but didn’t tell me so I’m disappointed with the captain. Someone of his experience who knows the game has not put his hand up and said he needed to come off,” he said.

“I couldn’t see it at the time and was wondering why the gap between our defence and midfield was too big.”

Latics are in 19th place after the draw, two points above the relegation zone, while Bury stay bottom of the table, nine points from safety, and Shakers boss Ryan Lowe was frustrated with the result.

“I’m gutted and disappointed. We dominated the first half but we dropped off in the second half,” he said.

“We let them get involved in the game.

“The goals we’ve conceded can be avoided but if you’re sloppy with your defending then you’ll get punished.”

ROCHDALE manager Keith Hill says his team can still avoid the drop after their impressive 1-0 win at Rotherham United.

Stephen Humphrys got the only goal of the game, with Rochdale now seven points adrift with as many as four games in hand.

WIGAN ATHLETIC stay third after a late equaliser rescued a point as they drew 3-3 at home to Scunthorpe United.

In the Championship, BOLTON WANDERERS are in 20th after a stoppage time equaliser earned them a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
