Airport charge for drop-off is a ‘disgrace’

I THINK it’s a disgrace that Manchester Airport management plans to charge £3 and £4 to drop off passengers, despite making huge annual profits.

It has already been for several years, the only airport that I know, which charges a non-refundable £1 for the use of a luggage trolley. I cannot see how the option of using a shuttle bus to ferry passengers to and from an off-site car park, to the terminal is going to work either.

What about those with children and those with heavy luggage, or both?

As a large international airport, the arrivals areas leave a lot to be desired, with passengers having a long walk, negotiating stairs both up and down, to reach passport control where there is usually a lengthy queue.

Compared to Alicante, a much smaller airport, it is no competition, with their ease of transit for passengers and where parking, within easy access of the terminal, is reasonably priced.

If there is an airport tax included in flight tickets, can someone tell me what this is to cover.

If so, one would assume it would be to provide acceptable facilities for passengers.

If this proposal is carried through, I will in future, whenever possible, be using Liverpool Airport. Marie Clements, Audenshaw

YET again the council-run airport is making additional charges to the holidaymaker and business communities alike.

I totally agree with many of the comments already made – this is purely and simply designed to make money.

I use Terminal One on numerous occasions throughout the year and only very rarely have queues been more than a few minutes. The queues to go through security are at least ten times longer.

With a little thought and change of design, and with little cost, the current system could be greatly improved. John Horrocks, Sale Moor

IN RESPONSE to your article regarding the proposed ‘Airport drop-off charges’ I agree with the chairman of the National Taxi Association that the whole thing is just a ‘cash cow’ in disguise of congestion.

The airport’s chief operating officer states: “As passenger numbers have grown, we have increasingly experienced major congestion problems on our terminal fore- courts”. When the airport increased the terminals did they not think ahead to the extra passengers using the airlines?

It is all well and good saying get the train or the tram. I have been at Piccadilly rail station on many occasions when they have announced the airport train has been cancelled. Also the tram system isn’t all that reliable, so what happens then?

A free shuttle service will operate to all three terminals, but how do elderly and disabled passengers cope with having to board a bus with their luggage?

The airport makes enough money as it is without fleecing passengers with drop-off charges.

If my memory is right, Manchester and Salford councils have money invested in the airport so what do they have to say in the matter? Ann Bannister, Manchester

Then again, perhaps the bars and restaurants themselves would like to contribute to this worthy cause. Audrey Roame, Swinton
