Yobs smash up cars

DOORS KICKED AND WINDOWS PUT IN AS 15 VEHICLES TRASHED ON ONE STREET

- By JOHN SCHEERHOUT AND CHARLOTTE DOBSON

RESIDENTS on a south Manchester street woke to find a scene of devastation after vandals had trashed 15 cars in a mindless wrecking spree.

Yobs went on a rampage on Platt Lane in Fallowfield as people slept, smashing windows, breaking wing mirrors and kicking doors.

Shattered glass was left strewn across the street - and people’s possessions were snatched from their cars.

Residents had to tape bin bags over their smashed windows as they set about cleaning the mess.

Lauren Wilkes, 20, went outside on Wednesday morning to find her Renault Scenic had been targeted.

“I woke up and went out to my car as usual before work and one of the windows had been properly smashed through,” she said.

“I was obviously quite upset because I knew it would be an expensive thing to fix.

“I thought it was just my vehicle, but then I looked around I saw a girl taping her car windows up with bin liners. They had put all of her windows through too.

“When I walked down the road there must have been eight or nine cars with their windows smashed. Whoever did it must have gone up and down the street smashing them all in.

“People who lived down the road had things stolen from their cars.

“Then a load of empty bags and other items were found dumped in Platt Fields. We think they’d taken what they wanted and then left all the empty bags in the park.

“We’re all annoyed because now most of us are left with big bills to pay for the damaged windows.”

Lauren, who works at a student letting agents, said the crime was reported to police.

The vandals are said to have stolen lighting equipment worth £400 from one car and a bag from another.

A Mini, a Fiat and a VW Polo were among the other cars damaged.

Police were called to the scene at 7.30am on Wednesday and an investigation is continuing, according to a spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police. Officers were at first called to reports that six cars had been damaged but more reports of damage vehicles were reported later.
