Fancy this convertible Range Rover, anyone?
a BraNd new range rover had its roof ripped off and another vehicle was badly damaged after a car transporter ploughed into a bridge in Bolton.
the drama unfolded on the M61 near kearsley at around 10.30am on wednesday.
the transporter had just made a delivery at a showroom in Bolton and was on its way to another drop-off when the smash happened.
police said the driver had forgotten to lower his top deck after his last delivery, meaning he was over height and hit one of the bridges which form part of the two tunnels on the motorway near junction two, close to the junction with the M60, on Bolton’s border with salford.
two vehicles on the top deck were badly damaged, including a range rover Evoque believed to be worth at least £30,000.
officers joked on twitter the vehicle had now become a ‘non-factory build convertible’. a silver model, also believed to be worth tens of thousands of pounds, was also damaged.
the transporter was carrying a third car, which wasn’t damaged.
the roof of the Evoque flew off and hit a breakdown recovery truck driving behind it, shattering its windscreen and leaving the driver shaken.
Neither the driver of the truck or the transporter were hurt. officers said the driver claimed he had been ‘distracted’ at his last delivery meaning he didn’t lower the top deck.
he told police he had been parked outside a showroom and a woman with a pram asked him to move his truck and, as a result, he forgot he hadn’t adjusted the top ramps.
Engineers examined the bridge said it remained structurally sound.
the driver, said to be in his late 40s, has been reported for driving without due care and attention.
