No special trophy for City Centurions

THE Premier League has no plans to award City a commemorative trophy to mark their amazing, record-breaking season.

The Blues totted up 100 points, smashing the previous record by five and earning them the nickname the Centurions.

That drew comparisons with the great Arsenal 2003-04 squad which went the entire season unbeaten and will forever be known as the Invincibles.

In fact, Pep Guardiola’s remarkable team racked up ten more points, won six games more, and scored 33 goals more, as well as breaking a host of all-time and Premier League records.

Arsene Wenger’s team was presented with a golden trophy by the league after the end of the season, specially commissioned as a tribute to their achievement.

The trophy sat in the Arsenal trophy cabinet until this summer, when it was presented to manager Arsene Wenger – who was in charge of the Invincibles – as a farewell present to mark his departure from the club.

M.E.N. Sport wondered if the Premier League might have similar plans to mark City’s unparalleled achievement, but they have confirmed that no commemorative trophy is currently under consideration.

It is thought that Arsenal’s golden trophy was awarded at the instigation of Barclay’s, who were then prime sponsors of the league.

But the league has had no sponsor since 2016, so this time there is noone to drive a commemoration of City’s record feat.

In addition to the records for most points and most goals, the Blues also racked up bests for goal difference, winning margin, most wins, most away wins, consecutive wins, most away points, and most passes in a game.
