Brave Bella learning to walk again

OWNERS APPEAL FOR HELP TO MEET VET’S BILL AFTER HORROR ACCIDENT

- By CLAIRE ANDERSON

A RESCUE dog has learned to walk on three legs after a horrific accident which left her fighting for life.

Bella, a black and white greyhound, lost her front right leg when she collided with a cast-iron bench at full sprint.

The two-year-old pup needed intensive care for three days after she sustained injuries to her limbs and body. Owner Emily Makin and partner Ollie feared the worst, but against all odds, Bella pulled through after two blood transfusions and round-the-clock care.

“Bella has always been a bit clumsy – we nicknamed her Bellaphant because of it – and she’s had a few other mishaps but nothing like this,” said Emily from Whalley Range.

Emily described the accident that happened early morning in May.

“When it happened, she’d gone chasing off as usual, I didn’t think anything of it. Then I heard a highpitch squealing noise and I thought to myself, ‘Oh no, she’s got a squirrel.’ So I ran after her. Then as I got closer I could see something was badly wrong. There was blood everywhere, it was just awful to see.”

The emergency team at Vets Now, in Whitefield, feared Bella had major nerve damage, but X-rays revealed she had actually suffered five separate fractures.

Helen Rooney, head nurse at the hospital, said: “We see a lot of very poorly animals here but the injuries Bella sustained are some of the most severe our team has ever encountered.” Bella has since learned to walk again on only three legs but the couple are now struggling to cover the treatment after pet insurance only paid for part of it. They have set up a Gofundme appeal to help bridge the gap. The appeal has reached £1,000 already when combined with donations on Facebook.

“We’ve been totally overwhelmed by people’s kindness. Complete strangers have been digging into their pockets,” said Emily.
