United won’t be distracted by ron

- By JAMES ROBSON

UNITED will pursue the signing of Gareth Bale over a potential reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Reds are continuing to monitor Bale’s situation at Real Madrid after the Welshman suggested he was ready to leave the Bernabeu this summer.

The 28-year-old is a long-term target of Ed Woodward, while Jose Mourinho is also a confirmed admirer.

United will continue to explore the possibility of what would be a club record deal for the former Tottenham winger, despite increased uncertainty over Ronaldo’s future at Real.

There is a growing belief Ronaldo will leave the Spanish giants this summer, prompting talk of an emotional return to Old Trafford.

Former England manager Fabio Capello claimed last week the fivetime Ballon d’Or winner wanted to work with Mourinho at United.

The 33-year-old’s mother also revealed that her preference was to see her son back at the Theatre of Dreams.

Despite Woodward’s long-standing desire to sign Ronaldo, he refused to be drawn into a fruitless chase when the forward similarly looked set to leave Real last summer.

Instead, the Reds pressed ahead with their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku signing the Belgian for £75m.

They appear determined not to be distracted by Ronaldo this summer either, with Mourinho looking to overhaul his squad.

Bale’s comments following the Champions League final last month put United on high alert.
