Jesse makes tattoo bet with fan for Sweden clash

JESSE Lingard has been making bets with United fans on Twitter after England reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate’s England squad beat Colombia in a dramatic penalty shoot-out win, in which Reds striker Marcus Rashford scored, to book their place in the last eight of the competition and Lingard’s already looking forward to it.

One United fan tweeted him: “Right, if you score against Sweden I’ll get your celebration added to my current sleeve. Deal?”

And Lingard replied to the fan by saying: “You’ve got yourself a deal.”

Lingard scored a spectacular goal against Panama in the 6-1 win in England’s second group game but has yet to find the net for the second time in the tournament.

And should he score against Sweden in the quarter-final game against Sweden on Saturday one fan will get his trademarked ‘JLingz’ celebration tattooed on his arm.

The United attacker is known for his different dance moves when celebrating and performed a move made famous by video game Fortnite when he scored against Panama.

But his trademark celebration is his ‘JLingz’ move where he puts his hands in front of his face and spells out his initials which he trademarked before heading out to Russia for the tournament. IF ever there was a giveaway as to the average age of your average keyboard warrior it was United’s announcement they had signed Lee Grant. Because the Reds had recruited a 35-year-old journeyman rather than Cristiano Ronaldo and it left some ‘disgusted’ while others fumed that Jose Mourinho was ‘killing’ the club.

Their memories are either not very long or their research is lacking. Sir Alex Ferguson made leftfield goalkeeping additions on at least two occasions and one was credited with an instrumental role in a double-winning season. Without playing.

The most exposure Tony Coton ever got was appearing on the United Review programme cover against Leeds United in April 1996. Coton, approaching his 35th birthday, had joined United from City in January for £500,000 following Kevin Pilkington’s flat-footed performance in the New Year’s Day capitulation at Tottenham. Pilkington’s positioning for both of Chris Armstrong’s second-half headers was questionable and five days later he conceded meekly against Division One Sunderland in the FA Cup.

A young United squad that was still smarting from the summer exodus of Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Andrei Kanchelskis wilted in the winter, winning two, losing three and drawing three of their Premier League fixtures as a 12-point chasm developed between them and leaders Newcastle. Schmeichel was forced off at Tottenham with United trailing 2-1. Spurs won 4-1.

“Peter had missed a few games the previous season with niggling injuries, which had given Les Sealey a number of first-team opportunities,” Coton told the M.E.N. “I want some experience to keep Peter on his toes, he’s lost that little edge, he’s missing training because he knows he’s going be playing.

“And I thought I might get lucky, just as Les had. I should have known better.”

Eric Cantona dominated the run-in, settling four 1-0 wins and salvaging a point in Fergie time at Queens Park Rangers, but his matchwinning momentum to began at St James’s Park and would not have been possible without Schmeichel’s impenetrable first-half performance. “Peter was awesome during my spell at Old Trafford,” Coton added. “He never missed a training session let alone a first-team match. United won the double that season and, whatever anyone says about the influence of Eric Cantona, to my mind Peter was the key to that success.” Coton later revealed Ferguson pulled him to one side at United’s Cup final reception and shook his hand, informing him Schmeichel’s intensity had increased with a credible competitor at the club. Coton only made the first-team bench once but was fitted for his FA Cup final suit and clutched the trophy aboard the open top bus parade through Deansgate. He moved to Sunderland in the summer but Coton left such an impression on Ferguson he was drafted onto the coaching staff in the late 90s and was credited for the Samuel Luckhurst
