Hilda Bugden bee a buzz for Corrie

-

CORONATION Street stars came face to face with a huge bee sculpture inspired by one of the soap’s most famous icons.

The Hilda Bugden sculpture is one of 100 giant bee sculptures that will go on display across Manchester from July 23 to September 23 as part of Bee in the City.

But it was Corrie favourites Samia Longchambon, Julia Goulding and Jane Danson who got the first look at the completed artwork by Lee O’Brien which was inspired by both Hilda Ogden and the Manchester-set soap.

The bee was taken to the set of Corrie on Trafford Wharf for stars of the soap to check out.

The artwork features the huge bee dressed up in the attire made famous by Hilda - with floral overalls and rollers tucked under a headscarf.

Hilda Bugden is seen washing a window in a classic terraced house - although Coronation Street becomes Colonization Street to stick with the bee theme!

Organisers will place eye-catching fibreglass sculptures of the insects at key landmarks around the city centre and surrounding suburbs throughout the summer for the public to locate on a free trail.

It will feature designs including a Rock’n’Roll bee signed by Liam Gallagher, a Hac-Bee-Enda bee celebrating the city’s legendary nightclub, and a footballing tribute to Sir Matt Buzz-Bee.

The project is being brought to the city by global public art producer Wild in Art.

Their previous work has included the Great North Snowdogs in the north east and Liverpool’s Superlambananas.

The bees will be auctioned off after the event to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s We Love MCR charity, which aims to improve the lives and life chances of Manchester people.
