Festival returns to highlight greenbelt threat

- By HELEN JOHNSON

A FESTIVAL which was launched to highlight the threat to the greenbelt is returning this Saturday.

The second annual Greenbelt Groove features headliners The Recreation, who also played the main stage at last year’s Rochdale’s Feel Good festival.

The festival was set up last year with the aim of raising awareness of how the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework could affect the greenbelt, after the first draft earmarked land for housing and industrial development.

The line-up features Duck McNasty; Palms; Ashley O’Toole; Max Moore; Between the Vines; M60; Son Primo; and The Recreation. There will also be performances by magician Magic Dave and poet Pete Wilky.

Festival co-organiser and Son Primo bass player AJ Williams said: “It’s a great opportunity for people to enjoy themselves while helping to protect the greenbelt and encourage Greater Manchester authorities to develop brownfield sites.”

Residents in Slattocks, Middleton, are so concerned that they have formed the Thornham St John’s Neighbourhood Forum.

Gordon Tilstone, TSJNF chair, said “We’re not against development and are working with Rochdale Council to produce a Neighbourhood Plan.

“People say we’re lucky to have the greenbelt on our doorsteps. True, but feel free to come and enjoy it because it belongs to everyone.”

The festival takes place in the garden of the Hopwood Arms, on Rochdale Road in Middleton, this Saturday. Doors open 1pm, acts on stage 2pm to 10pm. Entry is ticket only, tickets available in advance from the Hopwood Arms, Thornham Cricket club and the organisers on 07889 075244 or 07949 963761 or online at skiddle.com.

Tickets are £7 each or £21 for two adults and two children aged ten to 16. Under tens go free. Tickets on the door are cash only at a higher price.
