Police operation into child sex abuse nets two more arrests taking total to 21

-

POLICE have now made 21 arrests as part of an investigation into the grooming and sexual abuse of children.

Two men, aged 21 and 24, were arrested yesterday on suspicion of child sexual exploitation and possessing indecent images, police said. Both remain in custody for questioning.

The arrests bring the total number of people held as part of an operation codenamed Burgos to 21. The investigation to identify child sexual exploitation offences and provide specialist support to victims was launched in June last year.

Police revealed in February that nine children were receiving specialist support after being identified as potential victims.

The case centres on the Openshaw Park and Clarence Park areas of Bury. It is not known whether it focuses on an organised gang or a number of individuals.

Officers have been sent onto the streets to identify suspects and offences and say they are working with the community as part of a ‘wider disruption plan’.

Announcing the new arrests, police said patrols would continue to operate around Clarence and Openshaw Park.

Detective Sergeant Cheryl Morrell said: “Thanks to the extensive work of all the people involved in this complex investigation, we have been able to take positive action against child sexual exploitation in Bury.

“As a partnership, we continue to work closely with the victims of these offences, ensuring they have all the support they need.

“Our investigation into those who target vulnerable children will not stop here.

“If you have any concerns or information about child sexual exploitation in Bury, talk to our investigation team on 0161 856 8002.”

The investigation was launched in June 2017 and involves the multi-agency Phoenix CSE team, which links criminal justice with public sector organisations.

Phoenix was set up disrupt offenders engaged in child sexual exploitation, raise awareness and protect and provide support to victims.

There have been no charges relating to the operation Burgos investigation so far.
