Roadworks will make commutes an ordeal

-

Yesterday we reported about highways bosses warning commuters that travel times into the city centre could double because of year-long roadworks, due to start at the end of this month. Hundreds of readers commented on this story on our Facebook page. Here’s some of their views:

This is a disaster for me, I commute in from north Wales to park at the Arena at least three days a week and have to choose between coming off the M56 and taking Princess Road and then heading in, or going M56, M6 north and then M62, M602 and getting in that way. I will literally not be able to avoid any of this chaos and already have a 48-mile each way commute which on a good day can take more than an hour. This basically means that I’ll never be able to do it in less than an hour-and-a-half and most days it’ll be more than two hours each way. I could cry at this! Nicki Teese

Trying to penalise motorists and force people onto expensive, unreliable and already packed public transport. The supposed 20 per cent increase of capacity on certain junctions doesn’t really seem that much when you measure it against making everyone’s commute an absolute nightmare for a whole year! Stephen Porter

Any chance we could fix the holes in the road on Liverpool Street and Oldfield Road before August 29. It’s the new Regent Road while work is being done. Andrew Behan

From Mancunian Way towards Regent Road gets really bad because of that pedestrian crossing. Should have made an overhead pass. Lee Moore

The council wants to sort out congestion and pollution – that’s fine. Then sort out the traffic light sequences! How many times are you sat in traffic waiting for nothing to go across then when something goes to come across you stop them. Traffic lights – worst invention ever! Simon Dyment

They want to reduce the bottlenecking at Regent Road so they’re reducing the traffic from two lanes to one. Where is the logic in this? Ant Derbyshire

It’d be great if councils could finish one stretch of road at a time before starting the next one. Craig Probert So that means there will be roadworks on the Mancunian Way, Regent Road, M602, M62 and the M6 all the way to Birmingham. Sounds like fun. David Pearson

By reducing congestion they mean more cycle lanes on both sides of the carriageway, thereby reducing lanes, and according to the council it will make our lives easier. Just look at the mess they made on Oxford Road, Portland Street and beyond. Kousar Miah We are penalised constantly for trying to get to work. It’s disgusting. Kaye Downie

It already takes double the time it’s supposed to! My five-mile commute on these roads takes less than 20 minutes outside peak hours – but travelling to work takes 40! It’s ridiculous. Stephanie Wright

Oooh, all this congestion. We really need to introduce a congestion charge. Mark Bowker Aren’t we always moaning about the state of the roads and the awful traffic? Do you think a magic wand will solve that? We need these roadworks to make the required improvements. Sherri Coyne

You could walk to London quicker than you can get into town these days. Kev Lewis Noooo! Just sorted the roadworks on the M60 and now this! Diane Shovelton How’s that bus lane working out on the A580? Nice one. Chris Hall

So let’s reduce the A6, let’s put a bus lane down the A580 – and then we wonder why the already busy A57 turns into a bottleneck. Simon Hand

Reduce the number of out of area private hire vehicles, especially the ones from Wolverhampton and Rossendale and Sefton. They are congesting our city. Gaz Lewis
