PREMIER League legend Alan Shearer has insisted he would ‘never tell anyone to leave United’ after Jamie Carragher suggested Marcus Rashford may have to quit Old Trafford to further his career.

But has warned the striker he is unlikely to play as a centre-forward at Old Trafford while Jose Mourinho and Romelu Lukaku are there.

Rashford’s impressive displays for England this week stirred up plenty of debate about his club future and prompted suggestions he isn’t given enough game time at United.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher said a move to a club like Everton would suit Rashford and give him sufficient opportunities to realise his potential.

But that’s not a view shared by former Blackburn and Newcastle icon Shearer, who once turned down an offer to join United.

He told M.E.N. Sport: “I would never tell anyone to leave Man United. It’s one of, if not the, biggest club in the world. That’s a very difficult thing to say, but what I would say is he has to play regular football.

“He’s 20 and there comes a time when you look at things and say ‘I have to play regular first-team football.’ But I like him, I think he’s got incredible potential.

“He scored a very good goal at the weekend, he should’ve scored another two, but I wouldn’t necessarily blame him for that because that’s lack of game time.

“When he finds himself in those positions on a regular basis, I think he’ll stick them away.

“He’s got huge potential, huge ability - but the problem he’s got is he’s not playing as regularly as he should and when he does play he doesn’t play as a centreforward - and that will probably be the case while Romelu Lukaku and Jose Mourinho are at United.”
