Huge group of ‘reckless’ bikers take to streets
A POLICE investigation has been launched after scores of bikers rode dangerously en mass through the streets.
Police say up to 100 bikers on off-road bikes, motorcycles and mopeds were seen in Trafford, Salford and Manchester.
Some were seen speeding, riding on pavements, pulling stunts and riding in the wrong direction.
Witnesses say the huge group gathered at around 7pm and dispersed at around 10.15pm on Wednesday.
One witness who was driving said she saw dozens of bikes near Worsley on the East Lancashire Road in Salford, heading towards the M61 motorway slip road.
She said: “There were an awful lot of them all riding together at speed. They were riding erratically, slowing down and speeding up, and some were performing wheelies in the middle of the road.
“There could easily have been a serious accident as they were reckless. It was a bit scary really.”
Police launched an investigation after receiving a number of reports about the bikers’ dangerous antics.
Between 50 and 100 bikers are reported to have taken to the streets.
Superintendent Howard Millington, of GMP’s Salford Division, said: “We’ve been carrying out numerous lines of inquiries to identify the riders in the group who were seen to be driving irresponsibly.
“Not all of the riders in the group drove recklessly, but those who did posed a real risk to themselves and members of the public. I’d like to reassure the community that we are focused on tackling this issue and finding those responsible.”
