Wheelchair battery causes two bomb scares

-

A STREET has been taped off by explosives experts twice in two weeks – because of a wheelchair battery.

The A6 Stockport Road in Levenshulme was cordoned off at the junction with Albert Road for the second time with traffic diverted and people asked to leave the streets.

It is understood that officers went into a former estate agents, which is currently vacant, earlier in the morning and removed a device that looked like ‘lots of batteries taped together’. The landlord of the property has now confirmed that the device was in fact a wheelchair battery – the same one that sparked a huge emergency response last month.

On October 22, police swarmed Stockport Road after a ‘suspicious item’ was discovered inside the same building.

Jason Chase works in Cash Converters next door to the vacant unit.

He saw the device being removed by officers. He said: “It just looked like 20 D cell batteries taped together, the kind of thing you’d find inside an alarm.”

A spokesman for GMP said: “Police responded to reports of a suspicious device at a home on Stockport Road in Levenshulme om November 6.

“A cordon was put in place and bomb disposal officers attended.

“The item has since been confirmed as non-viable and officers have stood down.”
