Latics rescue FA Cup scare with late goals

- By ALASTAIR HANCOCK

OLDHAM Athletic loanee Callum Lang said the result was the most important as his team survived an Emirates FA Cup scare, after coming from behind to beat National League South outfit Hampton & Richmond Borough in the first round.

Second half goals from Dan Gardner and Lang saved Frankie Bunn’s side from leaving the competition at the first attempt, after Chris Dickson opened the scoring early on.

Lang said: “It took the whole game but thankfully we got the result in the end and that’s the main thing.”

The home side took the lead through Dickson, who struck home from the penalty spot, after Tyrell Miller-Rodney went down easily from Lang’s soft shove inside the area.

Lang admitted: “I was a bit unsure on the penalty and decisions didn’t seem to go for us.

“At half-time we said we were making it difficult for ourselves and that we had to go out and change that.”

Oldham found a way back after the break as Dan Gardner made it 1-1, tapping in a brilliantly timed ball from Rob Hunt, who galloped the whole length of the pitch to find Gardner in the box.

Lang made up for giving the penalty away, as he placed a half-volley into the back of the net to snatch the win for Oldham.

He added: “To finish up front and get a goal is great for me!”

Oldham will now face Maidstone United away in the second round of the FA Cup.
