Young offered new deal at Old Trafford

REDS IN RACE TO SIGN UP YOUNG ON NEW OLD TRAFFORD DEAL

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

UNITED have offered Ashley Young a new one-year contract as he approaches the final six months of his existing deal.

The 33-year-old has captained the Reds in the last six matches but is free to negotiate with rival clubs in the January transfer window once he enters the final six months of his current contract.

However, United have opened talks with the England international’s representatives over improved terms to retain Young until 2020.

Young joined United from Aston Villa for £16m in 2011 and is into his eighth season with the club.

They signed right-back Diogo Dalot in a £19m deal from Porto in the summer and left-back Luke Shaw agreed a new five-year contract last month, but Jose Mourinho values Young’s seniority in the dressing room. Young has enjoyed an Indian summer under the Portuguese and started five of England’s seven World Cup matches.

Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are the only other players out of contract in the summer and without the option of an extension.

United are understood to be in negotiations with other players and Mourinho said in September he wants to keep the Spanish duo and Young.

United are expected to exercise their one-year options on the contracts of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, Andreas Pereira, Matteo Darmian and James Wilson to tie them to Old Trafford until 2020.

David de Gea and Anthony Martial have also technically entered the last year of their terms but United are in dialogue over long-term arrangements and the club has the option of an additional year with both.
