‘RIP lovely man’: Corrie star Peter dies at 78

CORONATION Street star Peter Armitage – who played Kevin Webster’s dad Bill – has died at the age of 78.

The Yorkshire-born actor appeared on the soap several times, between the 1980s and 2011.

Tributes have flooded in from his co-stars.

Charlie Lawson, who plays Jim McDonald, took to Twitter to announce the death of the actor.

He wrote: “It’s with great sadness, that I’ve to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died. RIP mate.”

Steve McDonald actor Simon Gregson responded: “I loved Pete - what a lovely man - very sad. RIP lovely man.”

Samia Longchambo­n, who plays Maria Connor said: “So sorry to hear this, Charlie. Pete was such a lovely man. He’ll be sadly missed.”

Toyah Battersby actor Georgia Taylor added: “Aw, sad news, Charlie. He was a lovely man xxx.”

Jane Danson, meanwhile, who appears as Leanne Battersby, wrote: “So sorry to hear this, lovely man. Thoughts to family and friends x”.

Peter’s other screen credits include The Befriender­s, Couples, Jack The Ripper, Hearts And Minds and Lucky Feller, starring David Jason.

He also appeared in a Yellow Pages advert in the 1980s as a father trying to convince his son not to have a racing bike as a birthday present.

Four years ago, the dad-of-two announced that he had beaten bowel cancer and was hoping to return to the show. It is not yet known how he died.
