AN off-duty NHS worker sprung into action to save a baby’s life when the tot suffered a seizure.

Medics say Suzanne Sheldon’s quick thinking and decisive actions saved little Oliver Jayne’s life.

Health records clerk Suzanne had just stepped off a bus with her daughter when Oliver’s mum Lauren ran out of her house with her son in her arms.

Immediately snapping into action, Suzanne recognised that the one-year-old was suffering a febrile convulsion.

She grabbed the baby – who had stopped breathing and was turning blue – and held him across her knee, hitting him between the shoulder blades until he coughed up mucus which had become lodged in his throat.

Suzanne then stayed with Oliver and Lauren until an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.

Oliver’s mum Lauren, 27, has spoken of the terrifying ordeal. “I’ll be forever grateful that Suzanne came to our rescue,” she said.

Oliver had been celebrating his first birthday that same day but had been quite poorly.

“When he started having a fit and choking, I just picked him up and ran outside screaming for someone to help which is when Suzanne ran over,” said Lauren, from As pull in Wigan.

“I don’t really remember much else, I think I was just in shock.”

The care worker added: “I’m used to seeing people choke and have fits because of my job but it’s completely different when it’s your child, I just panicked. He’s absolutely brilliant now – you wouldn’t know anything had happened.”

Suzanne, 36, who works as a bank auxiliary nurse for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, says she was just happy she could help Oliver in his time of need. But she says it was just lucky that she ended up bumping into Lauren and Oliver.

The mum-of-two, from Goose Green in Wigan, said: “My youngest daughter and I were going to the stables where I keep horses and decided to get off the bus a stop early when I saw Lauren run out of her house holding Oliver.

“My daughter also suffered from febrile convulsions so I recognised what was happening and quickly grabbed him from Lauren and held him across my knee.

“I hit him between the shoulder blades which made him cough up some mucus that had become lodged in his throat as he had been quite poorly with a temperature.”
