Chairman to step down after almost 40 years on Dale board

- FOOTBALL

CHRIS Dunphy is stepping down as chairman of Rochdale.

Dunphy is retiring after the League One match against Bradford City on December 29 at the Crown Oil Arena.

He has been in the role for a decade, and on the Dale board since 1980.

“After much soul searching, the time has come to announce that I intend to retire as chairman of Rochdale Football Club at the end of the year,” said Dunphy.

“I have always regarded myself as a custodian of the club and now that the club has enjoyed their League One status for a number of seasons, is in a stable financial position, as well as once again having full ownership of the ground and of the pub next door, I am confident that I leave the club in a far stronger position than when I took the helm.

“I feel the time is now right for me to leave the club in the capable hands of the remaining board to develop for the future and take our fantastic club to the next level.

“I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve the club that I have supported since I was a child, for over 30 years both as a director and the chairman - it has seen me through births, deaths and even a couple of marriages!

“So I would like to thank the club for the fantastic memories it has given me and all of you for the support you have given me throughout the years.”

William Goodwin has also stepped down from the board and from his day-to-day involvement with the club.

Last week Andrew Kilpatrick, James Mason, Gina Buckley and Frances Fielding joined the board.

Meanwhile, last night’s Checkatrade Trophy match between Rochdale and Oldham at the Crown Oil Arena was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

A new date has yet to be arranged.
