Football photographer dies in motorway crash
A FOOTBALL club photographer was killed in a motorway crash as he travelled home from a game.
Peter Lee, club photographer at Radcliffe Borough FC, died in a smash on the M60.
Mr Lee, 60, was among seven Radcliffe fans and staff members travelling back from a Lancashire Cup game at Ashton Athletic when the crash – involving a Ford Transit van, a silver Toyota Avensis people carrier and a black BMW 1 series – took place near junction 16 in Salford at about 10.25pm.
A woman, aged 20, and a 39-yearold man were taken to hospital with serious injuries following the crash.
Police say a 12-year-old girl was also injured in the incident, but she has since been released from hospital.
Radcliffe Borough led the tributes to Mr Lee, a popular figure in non-league football circles.
In a statement, bosses at the EvoStick West Division side said: “We are absolutely devastated to inform you that our brilliant club photographer Peter Lee has sadly passed away following a car accident last night.
“He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.
“The club extends its thoughts to the other members of our football family, both staff and supporters, who were also involved in the accident last night. We wish them all a speedy recovery.”
FC United were among the clubs to pay tribute, tweeting: “Sincere condolences from all @FCUnitedMcr to all those affected by this tragedy, many of us have warm memories of a true gentleman and he will be greatly missed. “ending best wishes to Beth and hoping for a speedy recovery.”
Chester FC manager Anthony Johnson tweeted: “Pete was an absolute gentleman who will be missed by everyone. Devastated about this news.”
Hyde United FC tweeted: “Everyone at Hyde United send their deepest sympathy to Peter’s family and everyone associated with Radcliffe Football Club. Rest in peace Peter.”
There will be a minute’s silence before tomorrow’s game against Chasetown in memory of Mr Lee.
