SIR Alex Ferguson was surprised by members of United’s Class of ‘92 at The Ivy in Manchester city centre.

Former United players Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt all arrived at the newly opened restaurant in Spinningfields before their former manager and waited inside to surprise him.

Ferguson, who suffered a brain haemorrhage in May, arrived 10 minutes later for what he thought was a normal lunch to be surprised by some of his former players, according to onlookers.

The Scot played a crucial role in all four players’ careers and they were all among the thousands of well-wishers who sent messages when the United great was taken ill in the summer. The 76-year-old made his return to Old Trafford for the draw against Wolves back in September where he was given a warm welcome from the Old Trafford crowd. In July, Ferguson recorded a video message to thank the staff at the three hospitals which helped him. “Hello, just a quick message first of all to thank the medical staff at Macclesfield, Salford Royal, and Alexandra Hospitals,” Ferguson said. “Believe me, without those people, who gave me such great care, I would not be sitting here today. “So thank you from me and my family. Thank you very much. “It’s made me feel so humble, as all the messages I’ve had from all over the world wishing me the best and the good wishes do resonate very, very strongly with me. “So thank you for that support you’ve given me.”
