Mitchell looking to play his way into Reds’ plans

- By RICHARD FAY

DEMETRI Mitchell still believes he has a part to play at United regardless of who is the first-team manager come the end of the season.

The 22-year-old is currently enjoying a loan-spell at Scottish side Hearts as he looks to prove himself to the United scouts who analyse his every performance.

Mitchell made his maiden United first-team appearance under Jose Mourinho on the last day of the 2016-17 season, before moving to Scotland midway through the following campaign.

The young left-back has continued his encouraging progress with his performances for Hearts, but is adamant he still has a role to play at United in the future.

And while Mitchell has made just 18 appearances for his loan club this season, he is confident of proving himself at United when he returns to Old Trafford at the end of the current campaign.

“I’m at Hearts and I’m trying to make an impact and show what I can do here as much as possible,” Mitchell said.

“There are people at United who look after the players who are out on loan. They give you constructive criticism on all games. They use Wyscout and I’m sure Hearts also send them the footage as well.” Speaking about the managerial changes at Old Trafford, Mitchell admitted he is impressed by the new feel-good factor at Old Trafford but also took the time to thank Mourinho for giving him his initial chance at the club. Mitchell continued: “It’s all change at Old Trafford now and the boys are telling me they are enjoying it. Everyone has smiles on their faces and you can see that with the way they’re playing. “You can see Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford playing fluidly and smiling. It’s all good when you are playing football with a smile on your face. Ole is doing a good job. “I have to pay respect to Jose. He gave me my United debut so he has been an important figure in my career. He took me on tour twice with the United first team and I learned a lot under his management. “He’s a good person. He’s not always how you see him portrayed in the press. “Behind closed doors, you get a totally different character.” Demetri Mitchell
