Former Blue’s money shock

EX-CITY striker Ishmael Miller is bankrupt weeks after refusing to be paid by his current club.

The striker, currently at Tranmere Rovers, asked the club to freeze his wages while he recovered from injury.

But just over a week later he was declared bankrupt at a County Court hearing in Stockport.

The 31-year-old started his career at City, but failed to find the net in 20 appearances.

The journeyman’s career also included stints at West Brom, Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest, QPR and Middlesbrough.

But he’s spent a huge chunk of his career in the North West, with stints at Bury, Blackpool and Oldham Athletic.

And the Cheshire-based footballer filed a bankruptcy petition last November, before it was granted on February 7.

At the end of January, his current boss at the Birkenhead club, Micky Mellon revealed he wasn’t getting paid.

“He came in to see me about a week ago and we had the conversation where he said to me, ‘stop my wages until I get fit again,” he said.

“He wants Tranmere Rovers to keep moving forward while he’s out injured, which is possibly the first time I’ve heard that.

“I need everybody to understand how big a gesture that is from Ishmael at this moment in time.

“If he’d kept getting paid and waited until he got fit, nobody would’ve blinked an eyelid as that’s what’s supposed to happen.

“People might say, ‘well, he’s in a position where he can do that – well, he doesn’t have to do that.

“He knows how tight things are at this club and where we’re at in terms of what we’re trying to do.

“I think it says an awful lot about him as a man.”
