Aguero out for a clean sweep as Blues nail first of four

- By DAN O’TOOLE

CITY striker Sergio Aguero says the Blues are out to win every competition they are involved in this season after lifting the Carabao Cup for the second successive season.

Raheem Sterling scored the winning penalty as Pep Guardiola’s side ran out 4-3 winners on spot kicks after a goalless 120 minutes at Wembley.

City’s first retention of a major trophy in their history kept the Blues on track for an unprecedented Quadruple, with City a point adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool and 3-2 up after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Schalke.

An FA Cup quarter-final trip to Championship side Swansea awaits and Aguero says City harbour ambitions for further success this season.

“We are here to fight for all the competitions,” the Argentine said after winning his seventh major trophy as a City player.

“Obviously the Champions League isn’t easy but we are going to try to at least go as far as possible. And then with the Premier League we are there, and like I said we are going to fight for all the titles.” It was not a vintage City performance at Wembley, with Chelsea learning from the mistakes they made in their 6-0 Premier League defeat at the Etihad on February 10. Maurizio Sarri’s side were far more organised defensively and Aguero said the tactic was one that City will have to outmanoeuvre again this season to enjoy further success. “I think it was logical [Chelsea’s tactic],” the 30-year-old, who scored in last season’s final against Arsenal, explained. “The teams that don’t come out and press us have done well. “They didn’t press so much but it was pretty clear that they were going to wait [for us] and even more when they played without a No.9 we realised that they were going to try to hit us on the counter-attack.”
