Frustration for Latics as Stevenage snatch draw

- By ALEC WHITTAKER

OLDHAM manager Paul Scholes was left frustrated as Stevenage pounced to score a late stoppage time equaliser on Saturday, but admitted he was really pleased with his side’s performance.

In an uneventful first half, Alex Revell almost fired Stevenage into the lead in the 44th minute with a rocket from 25 yards, which Daniel Iversen managed to tip onto the bar.

But it was Oldham that took the initiative in the 47th minute when Jose Baxter unleashed a thunderbolt from 25 yards, which found the bottom corner.

However, after dominating for the entire second half, the Latics were punished in the 91st minute when a lapse in concentration from a corner allowed Kurtis Guthrie to head home Ilias Chair’s inviting cross.

And it could have been even worse for Oldham in stoppage time when Chair’s close range free-kick bounced back off the crossbar.

Post-match, Scholes took the positives out of the display, despite his side conceding an injury time goal in their last four matches, which has cost them four points in total.

“I was really pleased with how we played, and I thought we dominated, Scholes said.

“I’m disappointed with the end result and we have to learn how to manage games better and cut mistakes out if we’re going to climb up the league.

“We didn’t quite have the quality to get that second goal and that’s cost us.

“We have to learn from this and be more ruthless when we get chances to kill the game and then we won’t put pressure on ourselves like we have done today.”

The result leaves the Latics seven points off the play-off places, which is looking increasingly unlikely with just 11 games left to play.
