A WOMAN says she was ‘incredibly lucky’ to avoid being injured after a stolen van ploughed through the wall of her bedroom.

The 24-year-old had just woken up and had gone to make some breakfast in the kitchen when she heard an almighty bang.

She returned to her room to find the front end of a white van had ploughed through the wall of the house in Irlams o’ th’ Height.

The van, which was travelling down Duchy Road, Salford, is said to have careered through the front garden of the rented semi-detached home she shares with her dad and brother, as it turned onto Bank Lane at around 10am on Sunday.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said from her groundfloor bedroom she witnessed the driver scrambling free and running away from the steaming wreckage before police and firefighters arrived.

Police have confirmed he fled and said he has so far not been traced.

The van, which police have revealed had been stolen from a house nearby a short time earlier, was towed away.

The house was left badly damaged at the front, with big cracks in what remained of the front wall. A neighbouring property also suffered internal damage, police say.

The electricity and gas had to be turned off in the immediate aftermath, the tenant said.

Speaking to the M.E.N., the woman said: “Most days I would be sleeping at that time on a Sunday but I woke up at 8am.

“I was lying on my bed talking on the phone, then I went into the kitchen as breakfast was cooking.

“Then I heard this noise. I can’t describe it as I’ve never heard anything like it before. It was so loud.

“Then I came in and saw the guy. He was a young guy and he just got out and ran off.

“The van was at least a metre inside and there was a huge hole. The whole bedroom was ruined there were bricks everywhere.

“I was just in a state of shock. I was shaking. Normally at the time I would have been sleeping, so I am very, very lucky.”

The woman, her dad and brother were unhurt.

A GMP spokeswoman said: “It is believed the van had been stolen from a nearby property a short time earlier. No arrests have been made.”
