Sterling is the perfect role model says Foden

- By STUART BRENNAN

RAHEEM Sterling has the ‘wow’ factor - and he is passing it on to Phil Foden.

The City flyer inspired the 3-0 Carabao Cup win at Preston with a goal and an assist, plus a key pass for the third goal.

That earned him the respect of the Deepdale fans, who – contrary to many sets of supporters – clapped him off when he was subbed in the second half.

And afterwards Foden revealed how Sterling is now a role model and mentor to younger players at the club.

“Every time I watch him, I think ‘wow,’” said the 19-year-old, who made his comeback after missing two games with a stomach bug.

“He’s a better player every time I see him. He has got a lot more to come and that is what is good about him. He is still young and improving – and wanting to improve.”

The goal against the Championship side took him to seven for the season, making him joint top scorer with Sergio Aguero.

And that means he is already on course to improve his careerbest tally of 25, which he posted last season.

Sterling has become a role model on and off the field, and Foden is happy to learn from a man just five years his senior.

“Definitely, he is a role model – he helps me out a lot and I am just really happy for him.

“He helps in the game and in training and overall, helping me with my game, giving me tips and that is what a young lad needs coming through.”

Foden also enjoys watching Sterling play - as a player who himself likes to turn and run at defenders, it is an education as well as a pleasure. Asked what gives Sterling the ‘wow factor,’ Foden said: “Just how he drives with the ball and goes past players.

“His performance at Preston... I think he was one of our main players. When he gets the ball, I don’t even know what it is, he just glides past players and gets in the right places to score goals. He is always assisting.”

Foden was glad for his first start of the season after missing the last two games through illness, and said he is content to bide his time.

“Any time I get game time is important. I just try and enjoy it,” he said. “It is my boyhood club and it’s a dream to play for this club so any time I put the shirt on I just enjoy it to the max.

“I played against Preston so that is the main thing. I am just looking forward. I am just trying to take my minutes any time they come and do my best.”

Meanwhile, City were handed a home clash against fellow Premier League side Southampton in the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The ties are set to be played in the week commencing October 28.
