Drunk mum and pals in smash after girls’ night

- By CAMERON SINCLAIR

A DRUNK mum crashed her car trapping herself and two friends in the wreckage moments after she ditched plans for them to be driven home following a girls’ night out.

Mortgage advisor Angela Heyes, 32, had initially intended for her father to get her and the two women home following the night out - but at 2.30am she decided to drive herself.

On the way home Heyes lost control of her Hyundai ix35, ploughed into two parked cars and flipped the car over.

Police arrived at the scene in Heywood to find a scene of ‘absolute devastation’ with debris, glass, car parts and fuel all over the carriageway.

The friends were trapped in the wreckage for 40 minutes until firefighters cut them free. All were treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Hayes from Heywood, and who has a young daughter, failed a roadside breath test. A subsequent reading showed she was more than twice over the alcohol limit.

At Manchester Magistrates Court she admitted driving with excess alcohol and was disqualified from driving for 19 months. She was also ordered to complete 70 hours of unpaid work and pay £170 in costs and surcharges.

The court heard the incident occurred on May 11 this year after Heyes went on a Friday night out with her friends.

Prosecuting, Miss Martha Dowd told the court: “At 2.30am, police were asked to attend a collision on Bury New Road involving three vehicles.

“A car driving towards Heywood collided with parked cars. The occupants of a white Hyundai had tipped onto its side and was badly damaged on the passenger side with the female occupants still inside the car trapped and unable to get out.

“Police described the scene as one of absolute devastation, with debris, glass, car parts and fuel strewn all over the carriage way. It took the fire brigade 40 minutes to extract the defendant and the other occupants of the car.

“The two passengers had minor injuries and were seen to by paramedics. A roadside breath test was done and the defendant was arrested but was then taken to hospital to be looked over. A blood sample was later taken.

“Officers did not see the defendant driving but assess she must have been driving at some speed to flip the car onto its side. No serious injuries were incurred.’’

Tests showed Heyes had 191 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The alcohol limit in blood for driving is 80mg.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Shane Parkin said: “This was clearly a foolish judgement in that she decided to drive after consuming alcohol.”
