BEST OF THE REST
THE APPRENTICE BBC1, 9PM
LAST week’s opener showed us the series 15 candidates are as ego-driven, deluded and diabolical as ever.
Phew. Let’s face it, if the people weren’t terrible we wouldn’t tune in.
Continuing with the tenuous and unnecessary task tie-ins, the candidates are summoned to Alexandra Palace, where Lord Sugar and his crew are waiting in the middle of the ice rink.
We would have loved to see footage of their slippery walking to get out there, but no such luck. Anyway, the reason they’re there is because the next task is all about ice lollies, and the best way to reinforce that is by standing in an ice rink, obviously.
The rows begin immediately as the candidates battle over team leaders, products, flavours, prices, pretty much everything. Meanwhile, Lord Sugar is probably busy thinking about how many ice-related puns he can crowbar into the boardroom.
Who’ll have a meltdown and who’ll be frozen out?
THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP: HOW TO SLEEP BETTER CHANNEL 5, 9PM
IF YOU’RE the sort of person who can happily fall asleep in front of the box then don’t bother waking up: this documentary is not for you.
However, if you’re one of the millions of us who have trouble sleeping – and a whopping 70% of we Brits don’t get enough sleep, according the British Sleep Council – then hopefully staying awake will actually be beneficial for once.
Presenter Gaby Roslin and Dr Amir Khan are on hand to see how the latest science can help some of Britain’s worst sleepers. These include Carla, who suffers from restless leg syndrome, and Peter, who’s had chronic insomnia for more than 20 years.
They’re also running a fascinating trial on sleep deprivation, to test how a lack of shut-eye can impact things like our cognitive functions, our mood and emotional control, our propensity for risky behaviour – and even our ability to tolerate pain.
