100-strong biker gang cause havoc

- By SOPHIE HALLE-RICHARDS

PARENTS say their kids were left too frightened to trick or treat after gangs of bikers were reported causing mayhem across south Manchester.

Residents described seeing ‘up to 100’ masked men driving en masse through the city, pulling stunts, speeding and riding on pavements. Footage sent to the M.E.N. shows a large group of males on quad bikes, off road bikes and scooters, seen in Wythenshawe.

They can be seen weaving in and out of cars, and cutting up a number of vehicles at a set of traffic lights.

Some are spotted driving on to the pavement, while others can be seen crashing into each other as they try to make it round a bend. It is believed the bikers were taking part in an annual Halloween ‘ride-out,’ which sees masked off-road bikes take to the streets across the country.

In Leeds, a police investigation has been launched after around 50 riders were seen speeding through the city.

And last Halloween, around 100 bikers were spotted driving dangerously through the streets of Salford.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I have lived in Wythenshawe all my life and I’ve never seen anything like that. There must have been well over a hundred lads on bikes with rucksacks on going in the direction of Wythenshawe Park.

“They were all over the paths and roads, they didn’t care what the traffic lights were on. They were cutting cars up as well.”

It is believed the bikers were also seen causing havoc in Trafford, with some reports of groups travelling through Ancoats.

In a tweet, officers from GMP’s Stretford division said: “There was a large number of off-road bikes causing havoc all over Greater Manchester this evening.

“Neighbourhood officers from Stretford and Urmston worked together and managed to safely seize three bikes. “Checks revealed two to be stolen. “One male was arrested.”

The M.E.N. has contacted Greater Manchester Police for comment.
