Shirt show kicks off at football museum
A NEW exhibition coming to Manchester’s National Football Museum will feature the UK’s largest-ever display of football shirts.
The exhibition, which will make its debut here in Manchester this month, will see more than 200 iconic football shirts displayed.
Strip! How Football Got Shirty will examine how this essential bit of kit influenced culture, design, fashion and technology – including the rise of the ‘football hipster.’
Among the shirts on display will be the Umbro England home shirt worn by the
Three Lions in 1990,
Brazil’s classic 1970 World Cup shirt, and West Germany’s 19881990 shirt.
The garments on display come from the museum’s existing collection, alongside loans from football clubs, the Classic Football Shirts store, kit manufacturers and enthusiasts.
Interviews from key figures will be included as part of the exhibition, from the likes of Jurgen Rank (senior design director at Adidas, currently overseeing their Euro 2020 range) and Ben Patrick (credited with pioneering the replica shirt industry which made the England shirt widely available).
There will also be
Curator Jon Sutton high-fashion collaboration pieces from Fokohaela, Christopher Raeburn and Yohji Yamamato, and Patta.
Other shirts on display will be United’s black away shirt from 19931995, the England Women’s team shirt from 1991, and Diego Maradona’s
Barcelona shirt from 1983.
Jon Sutton, National Football Museum’s lead curator for the exhibition, said: “Football shirt culture has become a huge phenomenon and has devotees across the world.
“While fans will still buy a shirt to show support for their own team, there is a huge interest in international sides, special editions and a nostalgia for classic designs of the past.
“Fans will obsess over the details of colour combinations, placement of logos and even the sponsors of the shirt.
“While many of the shirts on display will be remembered with affection there will also be a few disasters in there too.
“We’re sure this exhibition will appeal to anyone with an interest in design, fashion and technology.”
