Boss has young guns in his contract sights

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

UNITED are hopeful Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong will sign new contracts following the recent renewals of Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood.

The pair, both 19, have entered the last eight months of their deals and the Reds do not have the option of an additional year on either contract.

M.E.N. Sport revealed United opened discussions with Gomes’s representatives in pre-season amid interest from Barcelona, and Chong confirmed he was also in discussions about committing to the club.

Gomes made his Reds debut aged 16 years and 263 days against Crystal Palace in May 2017 and Chong arrived from Feyenoord’s academy in 2016.

Chong has played eight times for the club since his bow under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the FA Cup against Reading in January, and Gomes has seven appearances to his name.

Williams, 19, and Greenwood, 18, inked new contracts last month and James Garner renewed towards the end of last season, but United are still working on the futures of Chong and Gomes.

“We’ve had lots of conversations with the boys,” Solskjaer said. “Obviously their contracts run out in the summer but we want them to stay.

“I can’t see a better place for a young lad that’s come through the ranks in the academy to play first team football. Both Angel and Chongy have been here for many, many years.

“We just want them to continue their development and hopefully they can see that when young lads take their chance, they’ll get more opportunities.”

United have recently regained form amid Paul Pogba’s prolonged absence with an ankle injury and Scott McTominay has rekindled his promising partnership with Fred in midfield. Solskjaer declined against piling any pressure on the absent Frenchman with United resurgent.

“It’s always good to win games and to have players on their way back from injuries,” Solskjaer added. “And good players. We’ve many good players coming back. “Hopefully we can keep the form going until they come back.”
