Angry Transit van passenger hurls missile at cyclist
BIKER STOPPED TO LET SOMEONE USE ZEBRA CROSSING
AN angry van passenger hurled an object at a cyclist after he stopped to let a pedestrian cross a road.
Web developer John Peden was cycling through Urmston when he stopped to let someone use a zebra crossing.
The 32-year-old claims the driver van behind him was clearly irritated at this decision and overtook him seconds later, going onto the opposite side of the road to do so.
But married John was stunned when a projectile was launched at him from the passenger seat of the white Ford Transit.
In the footage, captured on his bike’s rear-facing camera during the commute on November 7, an irate man can be seen leaning out of the window with an aggressive look on his face before the white item, which appears to be a disposable coffee cup, shatters on the road.
John, from Urmston, said: “I stopped at a pedestrian crossing to let someone across. The van got right up behind me at the crossing.
“Then 20 seconds later he overtook me, as he came past he threw something at me. I don’t know what it was it was, I think it was a coffee cup.
“I was just shocked to be honest. “I don’t know what I had done that had made him so mad.
“You can see he is braking before he overtakes me, it just shows I wasn’t holding him up at all.
“If it had hit me on the head and I had lost balance I could have been really hurt. It is just completely unnecessary.”
John, who has reported the incident to Greater Manchester Police, said it’s not the first time he’s been harassed as a cyclist on the city’s roads. He added: “I have had abuse before from people thinking you are blocking the lane. But it was a zebra crossing, so I had no choice but to stop.”
A spokesman for GMP said: “At around 11.30am on Thursday, November 7, 2019 police were called to a report of an assault on Urmston Lane, Stretford.
“A cyclist became involved in a dispute with a motorist. It was reported that the motorist then threw items at the cyclist.
“No arrests have been made and there were no reports of any injuries.”
