Matic names new facility in honour of ‘special one’

- By RICHARD FAY

A SERBIAN football complex which was built in part thanks to Nemanja Matic has been named in honour of former United manager Jose Mourinho.

The Reds midfielder has regularly invested money into his homeland, with his latest project being the construction of a new playing field in his home municipality of Ub.

Matic has overseen the construction of the new 500-seater facility which will now be named after the selfproclaimed special one.

A report from Serbian outlet Telegraf states Mourinho has been honoured with the pitch because of his ‘attitude of full respect for Serbia’.

According to the article, Matic wanted to get the former Reds boss involved with the project and even asked Mourinho himself if they could name the new facility after him.

The new pitch has been built opposite Nemanja Matic Street in Ub and is next to the Dragan Dzajic Stadium, with the project set to also include the construction of a football musuem. Following the announcement Mourinho (pictured) sent a pre-recorded message to the people of Ub thanking them for their support throughout his career.

“Hi, I’m Jose,” the former United manager said in a video message. “Ub is a special city with lots of special people who deserve a special football pitch.

“I am really happy and proud to know how well things are going and that our ‘special one’ pitch is almost ready for everyone in Ub to enjoy. Bye and I’ll speak to you soon.”
