Gold Digger’s set to become our new TV obsession as it keeps us guessing over hunk’s true intentions
THIS new age-gap drama is already shaping up to be an aspirationally addictive and welcome filler for the Doctor Foster-shaped hole in our lives. Everyone is beautiful, their wardrobes and homes even more so, but most of the characters are also deeply unpleasant, with inscrutable motives, and the hazy flashbacks add a mysterious note of foreboding.
This week sees 60-year-old
Julia (Julia Ormond) and boyfriend Benjamin (Ben Barnes), leave their London lovenest to travel to her borderline stately home in Devon, where everyone – especially her vile ex-husband Ted (Alex Jennings) – is convinced they can see the pound signs in the much younger man’s eyes.
We also learn more about her daughter Della (Jemima Rooper), notably that she’s a terrible stand-up comedian, a not much better girlfriend and a functioning alcoholic.
Although she does at least try and fight her paranoid brother Patrick’s plan to stalk Benjamin and discover whether he really is the titular Gold Digger.
But when she gives in and they decide to follow Benjamin, they catch him in a compromising situation. Is he really who he seems?
Although the whole series is now available on iPlayer, we think resisting the temptation to gorge on the boxset is the way to go, to build the tension each week and enjoy a bit of a Wednesday morning debrief with work colleagues as you discuss ideas as to where the plot will go.
