NOVEMBER 23: Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, takes a close look at a Bloodhound groundto-air guided missile during his visit to the Ferranti factory at Wythenshawe.

The Bloodhound served as Britain’s main air defence weapon from its introduction in the 1950s to the 1990s. It was also exported to four other countries.

The missile was designed to protect the RAF’s V-bomber bases from any attacking aircraft that may have eluded the Lightning fighter interceptor force.
