Scholes blast for ‘tame’ midfielders

Manchester Evening News - - SPORT - By RICHARD FAY

PAUL Scholes has warned Fred and Andreas Pereira they must improve drastically from their tame midfield showing against Sheffield United last weekend.

The midfield duo put in poor performances on Sunday afternoon as United were overrun by Sheffield United in the Premier League meeting at Bramall Lane.

In the absence of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba United opted for the Brazilian pair in midfield, however they struggled to get a hold of the game as the hosts comfortably took a two goal lead.

A freak spell in the second half saw United strike thrice in under 10 minutes before Oli McBurnie salvaged a point with his late effort for the home side. Scholes believes Fred and Pereira would be fortunate to ever play for United as a midfield pairing again, and if they do then he has warned massive improvements will be required.

“He got 7 minutes of a reaction that was it. The first hour was as bad as you’ve seen.” Scholes said.

“Anywhere away in the Premier League you have to realise for 20, 25 minutes it is going to be a fight. You’re not going to be left with possession of the ball, you’re going to have to expect challenges.

“As soon as Fred and Pereira realise it’s not always going to be easy in a Premier League game away from home, the better.

“If they ever get a chance to play again together, they’re going to have to improve massively.”
