Will Fred’s club help our kids? You bet!
I HAVE just read an article about Fred Done (bookmaker) and his project to build a youth club in the Manchester area.
As an avid Man City supporter he was not on my Christmas card list – until now.
As a kid growing up after the 1939-45 war things were hard and we kids had to amuse ourselves as best we could, but there was one thing that helped in my area (Cross Lane, Salford) and that was the Albert Schweitzer Boys Club at the top of our street. It was everything to us. Football, table tennis, snooker, etc, etc, kept us all busy training and playing every evening and weekends (no time to get in trouble). Then the finances dried up.
I wrote to the papers – the News and Chronicle in those days – and a reporter interviewed me and published an article with a view to finding sponsorship, but it never happened and the club closed.
The kids and the volunteers that ran it were devastated – the whole of our weekly activities were cut off in an instant.
I have thought many times that if I ever won one of those crazy Lottery prizes I would have loved to do what Fred is now doing.
Well done Fred, you have my total respect. J. Bebbington, Clifton
