Police seek witnesses after collision that left man in ‘life-threatening condition’

POLICE have made an arrest as a man fights for life in hospital after a hitand-run crash.

The 25-year-old victim, who hasn’t been named, remains in a life-threatening condition, police said.

He was walking across Boundary Street in Rochdale when a car collided with him. Emergency services were scrambled to the scene at around 8pm on Friday night.

The car said to have been involved was initially described by police as a light-coloured Mercedes C Class.

Greater Manchester Police said the force now believes it was a black Volkswagen Golf.

Officers investigating the collision have now arrested a 23-year-old man.

He was held yesterday on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop following a collision.

Police said the man remained in custody for questioning.

In a statement, the force said: “The pedestrian, a 25-year-old man, suffered a serious head injury.

“He was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.”

The street links Tweedale Street with Ashfield Road and is just outside Rochdale town centre.

The Golf now said to be involved was being driven towards Tweedale Street at the time, police said.

Greater Manchester Police have issued an appeal for witnesses.

They also want to hear from anyone with dash-cam footage.

Sergeant Brian Orr said: “A man has been left fighting for his life as a result of this collision.

“I am particularly interested in speaking with anyone that saw a black Golf in the area last night or anyone with dash-cam footage.

“I would urge anyone with any information that could assist our inquiries to get in touch.”

According to reports at the scene, residents and passers-by ran to help the man as paramedics arrived.

Police officers were pictured taking photographs of certain areas of the road and laying out marker tags as an investigation got under way.

Boundary Street was closed by police from Mere Lane to King Street East.
