Racist rampage of thug refused a refund in shop

A THUG who went berserk after being told he couldn’t get a refund in an Arndale shop has been jailed.

Eachan Springer, 28, attacked a female staff member, spat in her face and grabbed her hair, causing her to fall to the ground.

Springer became angry after being told that he couldn’t have a refund for a jacket he had bought online, which had been posted to the wrong address.

Now Springer, who also racially and homophobically abused police officers who were called after he turned up at his father’s house demanding the return of Pokemon cards, has been locked up after being declared ‘dangerous.’

Manchester Crown Court heard that Springer, from Crumpsall, Manchester, was caught by Arndale security staff and arrested by police. After being taken to Longsight police station, he was put in a cell. Officers found he had a snap bag of cannabis. While in custody, Springer caused water to flood out of his cell, and blocked the spy hole.

Later, ten officers went into the cell to deal with the situation, with two of them carrying shields for protection.

Springer put one in a headlock and then bit him on the shoulder.

Springer, formerly of Crumpsall Lane, Crumpsall, pleaded guilty to offences of common assault, possession of one snap bag of cannabis, criminal damage and actual bodily harm.

He also appeared before the court for racially and homophobically abusing police officers who were called in response to an incident involving his father.

The officers later told of their ‘disgust’ at receiving such abuse while simply doing their jobs.

Springer pleaded guilty to offences of criminal damage and two counts of racially aggravated harassment.

The court heard that Springer, who suffers from mental health problems, hadn’t been taking his medication at the time and had been homeless or living in hotels.

Sentencing, Judge Hilary Manley told Springer: “When you feel you have been slighted or wronged by anyone, you resort to verbal and physical violence.” She said that Springer had made a ‘conscious decision’ not to take his medication. The judge ruled that Springer, who has a previous conviction for committing grievous bodily harm with intent, represented a ‘significant risk’ to the public of causing ‘serious harm.’ He will serve two-thirds of an 18-month sentence, and a further three years on licence.

The judge also imposed a restraining order preventing Springer from contacting his father for five years.
