Fred paying out on ‘Pool

Manchester Evening News - - SPORT -

FRED Done made history when he became the first bookie to pay out early on who would be Premier League champions.

That was back in 1998 when his beloved United were 12 points ahead of Arsenal – but he caught a cold and the Gunners bounced back to pip Sir Alex Ferguson and his faltering team.

But now Fred has done it again, paying out earlier than ever on Liverpool winning the title in 2020, costing him more than a million.

He was convinced he should give thousands of fans of the Merseyside table-toppers an early Christmas present after watching United pull off an against-the-odds derby win against City at the Etihad.

He said: “I’ve just watched my team beat arguably Liverpool’s biggest rivals City, 2-1. It was a thrilling game and I’ve loved every second of it. So - I’m going to pay out on Liverpool for the Premier League… and it’s going to cost me plenty of dough, but it’s my Xmas present to all my Scouse punters who have been paying for my holidays all these years!”

In 2011/12, ignoring the pleas of Sir Alex Ferguson, Fred paid out on United yet again, with them five points clear of City in April of that season.

But that was the year of Sergio Aguero’s late, late winner at the Etihad against QPR that clinched the title – the Premier League’s most thrilling finish ever. Fred had played two, lost two, in the early pay-out stakes!

But it was third time lucky in 2013 when United, who were 12 points clear with a dozen games remaining – romped to the title.
