ANDY Whyment may not be jetting home from Australia donning the jungle crown, but ‘King Kirky’ is certainly leaving with a whole new legion of fans.
The Coronation Street star proved to be a fan favourite during his stint on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, so much so viewers branded the final on Sunday night a ‘British TV disaster’ and claimed he was ‘robbed’ after Jacqueline Jossa emerged as Queen of the jungle.
Andy, who plays Weatherfield’s Kirk Sutherland, is now heading back to sunny Salford after what he describes as an ‘emotional’ but the ‘most amazing experience’.
Updating his Instagram followers, the actor said: “On our way back home, looking forward to getting back and putting the Christmas decorations up. Thanks Australia, it’s been emotional and the most amazing experience of my life, thanks again for the support, UK.”
He has also promised that his new heightened fame won’t change him and that he is desperate to get back home to do the Asda food shop.
“I’m looking forward to getting back and just getting into my normal boring life of just getting home from work, closing the front door and sitting on the sofa and watching telly,” Andy, 38, said.
“I know my profile is probably going to be higher now. I didn’t do [the show] for that reason. I’ll still remain myself. I’ll still go to Asda on a Friday and do the big shop with my wife.”
The Corrie star received an outpouring of support during his jungle stint from his co-stars who have dubbed him ‘King Kirky’.
Andy has said that he can’t wait to catch up on the Salford-based soap – as he has it ‘series-linked’ at home.
Character aside, during Sunday’s night’s live ITV final an emotional Andy was overwhelmed that people had voted for him, and not for Kirk.
“To know people had got behind Andy Whyment, I was humbled massively by that,” Andy added.
“I was myself and to think people liked me for me. I have never cried so much.”
