INSIDE THE CHRISTMAS FACTORY

BBC2, 8.55PM

EVERYONE loves a good nibble when it comes to a party, hoovering up canapés as we quaff our prosecco or mulled wine.

Nowadays people feel they have to serve up more than a soggy vol au vent or cheese and pineapple on sticks if they want to impress, and so our purchasing of party food has gone through the roof.

Gregg Wallace is heading to a factory in Nottingham that employs a staff of 600 people around the clock, to help them produce an incredible 200,000 canapés every 24 hours. Turns out it takes a huge amount of ingredients and effort to produce those tiny little delicious morsels.

For those of us wanting help with the bigger bites, Cherry Healey shares the science behind cooking the perfect Christmas turkey while historian Ruth Goodman reveals why Advent, which used to be a time of fasting, is now all about chocolate calendars.

ELECTION 2019/ALTERNATIVE ELECTION NIGHT

BBC1/ITV/CHANNEL 4, 9.55PM

IT’S going to be a long and stressful night, ladies and gentlemen.

The polls have closed and now it’s time to wait for the results to come in, and we have a few choices of who keeps us company through the wee small hours.

On the Beeb, we have the unflappable and calm Huw Edwards in the studio, who will be joined by correspondents including Laura Kuenssberg, Andrew Marr, Nick Robinson, Naga Munchetty and Sophie Raworth.

Over on ITV, News at Ten anchor Tom Bradby will be hosting the coverage, joined by regional correspondents and political analysts including ITV’s political editor Robert Peston.

But if you feel you need something a bit more light-hearted, then Channel 4’s Alternative coverage could be the best choice.

Hosted by Krishnan Guru-Murphy and Katherine Ryan, with Rylan Clark-Neal gathering opinion from the audience, Clare Balding bringing the results and Rob Rinder out and about to assess the mood on the ground.
